 Traditionally some travellers cross the Pennines at Hartside Pass and rest for a few days at Melmerby green on the way to and from Appleby Horse Fair in June. In recent years numbers of caravans have increased and some stay on the green for the full 2 weeks.
 
 
 Some estimate that there were no less than 200 caravans in 2006 when there was some fighting; at least one car was damaged. The village pub substituted plastic "glasses", and was closed one evening by the police.
