Originally built in the 16th Century and rebuilt in1866, Gale Hall was the manorial residence of the small manor of Gale.
The manor was created in1680 when the Hutton family, (who were lawyers):
“improved their demesne by good husbandry and enclosing hill commons”.
In 1684 Richard Singleton, Rector of Melmerby, wrote of the area:
"
Margett Hardies well, which is in the Gale intack : some say it will purge both waies, but this I am sure of that if any drink of it (as I have done when hunting) they will presently become very hungry. It was so called from a woman of that name who frequented it daily, and lived to a great age: they report her to have been a witch”.
