Viewed from the Eden Valley, Melmerby Fell can be seen as part of the wall like escarpment which is the Western edge of the North Pennines, an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB), this includes the Moorhouse and Cross Fell Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) with an area of 34000 acres (14000 Ha).

Melmerby Fell comprises 935 hectares of common land. Cross Fell has the longest lasting snow beds south of Scotland.

The picturesque village green in Melmerby at about 11 acres (6 Ha) is one of the largest village greens in the country, it is crossed by a stream and includes a wash fold, and a stone feature, the dub, created by Andy Goldsworthy.

Much of the area is blanket bog overlying Carboniferous sandstone. There are acid and base rich flushes, exposed limestone, and mineral spoil heaps. In fact habitats are very varied.

The flora and fauna are very interesting and include rarities.

There are breeding populations of merlin, peregrine, buzzard, kestrel, raven, short-eared owl, golden plover, dunlin, common sandpiper, lapwing,redshank, curlew and snipe.

There are passage records of golden eagle, hen harrier and snow bunting. Mammals include hedgehog, common pygmy and water shrews, water vole, mole, wood mouse, house mouse, brown rat, pipistrelle bat, brown hare, fox, badger,stoat, weasel, otter, roe deer, and red squirrel

The local flora includes:Cloudberry, bilberry, crowberry, wild thyme, limestone bedstraw, fairy flax , northern bedstraw, spring sandwort, mountain everlasting, mountain pansy, autumn and spring gentians, alpine catstail, alpine forget-me-not, lesser clubmoss, starry saxifrage, marsh saxifrage, alpine foxtail, green spleenwort, brittle bladder fern, hoary whitlow grass, hairy stonecrop, roseroot, alpine pennycress, alpine scurvy-grass, and the rare alpine cinquefoil.
