After the dissolution of the monasteries in the 1530s, many old religious traditions started to die out.
The North of England was slow to lose all of these practices and rush bearing still takes place in parts of Cumbria.
In Melmerby May Day celebration has been revived and egg jarping, (tapping), (dumping) has returned.
On a grey, drizzly Saturday 13 May 2006, May Day was celebrated on the village green. Penrith Town Band played as there was maypole dancing, and Emma Louise Cork was crowned May Queen. There were various stalls, races, and a pet competition.
Egg jarping in the Shepherds Inn caused a great mess, but fun and ale was had by many in great measure.
Nikki Holme, May Day Chairman pointed out that the attendance was as great as last year despite the damp weather.
Midsummer bonfire is another lost tradition. The Melmerby bonfire of 4 July 1857 was possibly the last.
It is waiting to be revived!
